Ok all you women, young voters, and people of color–I hope you apply to get on this commission. So far, the applicant pool is far from being representative of California’s demographics. As of February 5, the applicant pool has been overwhelmingly male (68%) and overwhelmingly white (72.8%). Also just about half of all applicants are over 56 years old. Only 12% are 35 years old or younger.
The 14-member Commission was authorized with Prop 11 (Voters FIRST Act) in 2008. The purpose is to have citizens, rather than legislators, be responsible for drawing the lines of legislative districts.
The WeDrawtheLines website states: “As a member of the Citizens Redistricting Commission, you would have a hand in drawing the lines of the districts these California legislators represent. What communities are included within a district’s boundaries largely determines which candidates can win elections there. If you want people like you to be well represented, then you need to draw the lines
The following is from The Greenlining Institute:
Dear Community Leader,
Tuesday February 16th by 5PM is your last chance to sign up for the Citizens Redistricting Commission.
Apply HERE to ensure that your community has a voice in shaping our political landscape for the next decade. While almost 70% of our state are people of color, less than 30% of commission applicants come from communities of color.
Why You Should Care About Redistricting:
Redistricting equals representation. It determines who is represented, how well they are represented, and what laws are passed for the next 10 years. Learn more HERE.
Commissioners Are Compensated:
Redistricting Commissioners will be paid $300 a day for each day they work. All Californians, regardless of income, should apply and play a role in this important process.
